Salvia Abuse: Effects, Dangers, & Addiction

what is salvia

Many perennial salvias will grow well without supplemental fertility if sited in a well-prepared soil containing compost. For more information on preparing the soil for a perennial garden, see HGIC 1153, Growing Perennials. Salvias (also known as sages) are popular garden plants because they flower for an extended period and do well in hot, dry conditions. They provide an incredible variety of fragrance, bloom, plant habit, and color. Salvias have brilliantly colored flowers, square stems, and attractive, often scented foliage.

Mass plantings can be a vivid statement or a striking landscape border. The Lamiaceae family consists of over 200 genera of plants and more than 7000 species. Most species in this family are well known throughout the world, and are widely popular due to their fragrant leaves, attractive ecstasy mdma or molly flowers, and medicinal purposes. Salvia, commonly referred to as woodland sage, violet sage, or balkan clary, is an herbaceous perennial that is in the Lamiaceae family. The Lamiaceae family is also referred to as “the mint family” and is the largest family of the plant order Lamiales.

Because the drug is not controlled at a federal level, it is more frequently abused by adolescents and young adults who are restricted from other substances, such as alcohol, compared to adults ages 26 and older. How long the effects last and the drug stays in your system depends on how much you’ve taken, your size and what other drugs you may have also taken. Depending on dosage, experiences can vary from the fairly mild to full blown with psychedelic hallucinations. It is sold on the internet and in headshops as ‘herbal ecstasy’, salvia is one of a number of substances marketed as a ‘herbal high’. Some people may find chewing the plant unpleasant due to the bitter taste and amount of plant material required.

Write down what the person does and says during the trip, clearly and with details so the person can picture their trip later. The quid stone peaks at around the time you spit it out, and plateau there for a good hour, before tapering off. The entire experience of chewing a quid is relatively short from first chew to baseline, but it can always change from person to person. The first Mazatec variation starts with a large pile of Salvia leaves, which is ground up and mushed into a pulp that can be purified into a liquid drink. The Mazatec method of taking Salvia is a traditional method with historical roots. It’s safe and reliable, but takes up more leaves and raw Salvia plant than other methods.

  1. Ego loss, or loss of awareness of self, is nearing, causing people to experience “merging” and become “one” with other objects or people in their world.
  2. If you find these little tiny pests on your Salvia plants, apply an insecticidal soap to the affected areas.
  3. The flowers are usually tubular with two lips and only two stamens and are borne in terminal inflorescences.

Daylilies are so easy to grow you’ll often find them in ditches and fields, and as escapees from gardens. And yet they look so delicate, producing glorious trumpet-shaped blooms (some fragrant) in myriad colors. In fact, there are some 50,000 named hybrid daylily cultivars in a range of flower sizes (the minis are very popular), forms, and plant heights. The flowers are borne on leafless stems and although each bloom lasts but a single day, superior cultivars carry numerous buds on each scape so bloom time is long, especially if you deadhead daily. Depending on the cultivar, the strappy foliage of the daylily may be evergreen or deciduous. Once established, Shasta daisies are easy to care for and can be grown in full sun (like perennial salvia) or partial shade.

Species & Cultivars

Salvia requires low to almost no maintenance once the plant is well established. Removing spent blooms and old leaves over the seasons will keep your plant looking nice and neat and prevent pests and diseases. Remember that soaking your plants at a less frequent rate is better than a light watering every day.

Salvia should be used with care, especially by people with a history of mental health issues or aggressive behavior. Adhere to the 6Ss of psychedelic use to minimize any risks and maximize potential benefits. Although not widely used, Salvia divinorum is a potent psychedelic characterized by unique visionary experiences. It shows great potential for treating pain and addiction, as well as depression—whether in traditional Mazatec ceremonies or more clinical, Western settings.

What is fascinating about Salvia in regard to other psychoactives, is how different its properties are from drugs like mushrooms and LSD. Whereas many psychoactive compounds are classified as alkaloids, Salvinorin A is a pure chemical that induces intense, sometimes frightening effects in the smallest of measured doses. Salvinorin A acts on different opioid receptors than other psychedelics, which positions it in a league of its own. Deep purple stems bear luminescent violet blooms, extremely popular with bees.

They add a burst of color to any garden but they can also work medicinally and for culinary purposes, such as for seasoning. Although these effects, or “the high,” can be short lived, some people may experience a salvia “high” for several hours. However, people do not know what the long-term effects of salvia use might be. For this reason, it is not appropriate to consider it a safe drug. The Mazatec also roll fresh salvia leaves into a cigar-like “quid.” They suck or chew the quid without swallowing, and so they absorb the drug from the mouth lining into the bloodstream. An interspecific hybrid results when two different species of Salvia combine genetic material.

When Mazatec Indians used salvia for their healing rituals, the plant provided an altered state of consciousness. The long-term impact of using salvia is still unclear, and there are concerns that it may effect your mental health. Although the herb’s use as a recreational and medicinal drug is becoming more popular, the scientific literature documenting the benefits and negative consequences of salvia is scarce. If you or someone you know is fighting drug addiction, recovery is possible. Talk to your health care provider or check your state or local health department websites.

In most hardiness zones, salvia seeds can be sown directly in the ground in early to midspring (after the danger of frost has passed). Choose a site with full sun and loosen the soil about a foot deep to accommodate the plant’s eventual root system. Spread the seeds over the top of the soil and cover them just slightly, as the seeds need light to germinate. When planting your salvias, allow plenty of room for the plants to grow. Take cuttings from non-flowering branches that are around 3 inches long. Strip the lower leaves and trim each cutting below a node before placing them in a pot of compost.

A person at level four gets the same kind of visual and auditory experiences as a person in level three, but they are fuller, more concrete, and longer lasting. Instead of two dimensional designs and shapes, scenes and 3 dimensional visuals can occur with the eyes closed, and when focused on without distractions these scenes can expand to fill the user’s conscious state. As if one is “entering” the dream that you saw in level three, level four experiences can become complex and coherent enough to follow story lines and explore hallucinatory landscapes. As the level’s name suggests, a person tripping at level three experiences light visions, aural and visual. These can be similar to the “mini-hallucinations” that are created by hypnagogic imagery, experienced by everyone before sleep. Common visuals are pulsating or repeating geometric designs, fractal patterns, lattices, and other abstract combinations of colors and shape, in addition to people and objects when nearing level four.

Cover the pot with a plastic bag and set in a cool greenhouse with protection from the sun. Planting salvia in the garden attracts pollinators and ensures color through hot, dry summer days. There are more than 900 types of salvias in both perennial and annual form, from the common red salvia to more unusual varieties. Blue-green velvety foliage is a reminder of its kinship to sage, just as its aromatic leaves signify its relation to mint. Fragrant flowers attract pollinators while the aroma of the leaves tends to repel pests.

The effects of this drug include hallucinations, dizziness, visual disturbances, and more. You can consider cutting it back to the bottom of the plant, just above ground level. The genus Salvia exhibits a wide range of forms and habits; however, most species grow rapidly. Some species reach 5 to 6 feet within a season, while others grow low enough to be used along flower bed edges. Depending on the species, salvias range in width from 12 inches to 4 feet.

Perennial salvias (also known as “sage”) are heat-loving, deer-resistant plants that thrive from midsummer through fall. Diseases most commonly occur in greenhouse production or under cool, wet weather conditions. Potential problems for salvias include damping-off of seedlings, stem and root rots, powdery mildew, Botrytis blight, aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. For more information on addressing these problems, see factsheets HGIC 2771, Insecticidal Soaps for Garden Pest Control, HGIC 2049, Powdery Mildew, and HGIC 2100, Gray Mold (Botrytis Blight). Agreed upon by all experienced psychedelic users is the need for an extra, sober person to stick around and take care of a person who is heavily tripping.

The most common (and desired) effect from salvia is hallucination – both visual and auditory. In extremes, hallucinations can cause a person to lose touch with reality, which may put them in danger. If the police catch people supplying illegal drugs in a home, club, bar or hostel, they can potentially prosecute the landlord, club owner or any other person concerned in the management of the premises. There is some concern that salvia could understanding alcohol and anger’s connection trigger psychotic episodes, particularly in young people and people with previous history of, or a family history of, mental health problems. Salvinorin A is a potentially illegal substance, and we do not encourage or condone the use of this substance where it is against the law. However, we accept that illegal drug use occurs, and believe that offering responsible harm reduction information is imperative to keeping people safe.

Some people have reportedly run into walls and injured themselves, but didn’t feel pain. These reports are currently anecdotal, and no one has yet been hospitalized for problems related to accidental or intentional injury drug withdrawal symptoms treatment and management while intoxicated on salvia or for seizures caused by the hallucinogen. Still, for those who may be at risk of a seizure disorder, or who may injure themselves accidentally, there can exist several salvia dangers.

Salvia leucophylla ‘Point Sal Spreader’, also known as purple sage, grows 2 feet tall and spreads to 10 feet or so wide. Great for slopes, it is very drought-tolerant and is hardy in Zones 8-10. Salvia pachyphylla is exceedingly tough and bears spikes of purple flowers throughout the summer. Other varieties have hallucinogenic properties when chewed, smoked, or steeped in tea. There haven’t been studies done yet about the detrimental effects, but some people may experience neurologic, cardiovascular, or gastrointestinal side effects. Once the plant becomes well established, it will begin to form small clumps of new growth that will spread or be divided to grow new plants.
